In a release, the association said Connell, who died at his home at New Montrose on January 3, was a fixture at calypso symposia over the years.

According to the release, Connell specialised in the presentation of “stagecraft”, an area which is very important to the use of the stage by artistes in their on- stage performance.

“Always a jovial individual whose skills were also evident in the training of many Carnival contestants for many years, being the trainer on the Carnival Development Committee (as it was called), for the beauty contestants and also dancers who were expected to perform at beauty shows.

“His skills also extended to youths and dance groups can attest to his contribution to their development over several decades,” the release said.

“Tracy Connell is no longer with us but for those of us who were able to know and appreciate what he did for the Development of Culture in St Vincent and the Grenadines he must go down as a Cultural Icon in this Nation of SVG.”

The general secretary of the Association, on behalf of the SVG Calypso Association, expressed heartfelt condolences to his family and the numerous artistes with whom he shared unselfishly his talents over the years.

Connell was 81 years at the time of his death. He was laid to rest at the St Georges Cathedral churchyard on January 7, 2014.
