Parents involvement crucial to children’s reading success – Teacher

This is the view of Suzette Abbott King, a teacher and literacy co-coordinator at the C.W. Prescod Primary School.

Speaking at the launch of the school’s literacy week activities on Monday, King explained that research has shown that parental involvement in children’s learning positively affects their performance in school.

“Parents, your involvement is crucial to your children’s reading success. This is a task you can perform with or without training.

“What can I do? You may ask.

“Well, you can make regular visits to the library, read to them, play with your children, listen to them read and help them with their writing,” she encouraged.

King encouraged her fellow teachers to continue their duties as educators, despite the many challenges they face.

“Continue to create that warm and friendly environment that augurs well for learning. Let us continue to support and work with our parents. Our children need us to help them harness those skills that lie within them. Let us work together to produce students who are bold and expressive in their literacy skills.”

The private sector also has an important role to play in the education of the nations’ students, King stated.

“If our schools are to be effective in carrying out their mandate, that is, to educate our children, they have to rely on your support and cooperation.

“Help in whatever way you can. Be ready to offer donations, whether money or in kind. After all, these students will be running your business sometime in the not so distant future,” King added.

The C.W. Prescod Primary School celebrated its literacy week from February 11 to 15 under the theme “Boldly expressing my literacy skills.”(AA)
