The week began with each teacher highlighting to the pupils the importance of reading. The week was filled with several activities such as an educational treasure hunt, word day, word search and word puzzles, reading of several genre of stories.

The week culminated with students wearing their hats highlighting different reading themes. The grades five and six students participated in a public speaking competition, while other students read their compositions.

The literacy coordinator, Fiona Taylor, highlighted the dangers of not being able to read.

She said, “All readers may not be leaders, but all leaders are readers. You may say ‘I want to be a carpenter and I don’t have to learn to read, but you need to know numbers so you can read measurements’. You may say, ‘I want to be a policeman/policewoman and I don’t have to learn to read’, but you may have to write a statement of a crime. You may say, ‘I want to be a mason so I don’t have to learn to read’ but you will have to read the blueprint of a house. You may say ‘I am going to the USA or Canada so I don’t have to learn to read’, but you will have to read signs or you will be lost. No matter where you go or what you want to be in life, reading is important”.

Mrs Pierre, the principal, in her closing remarks highlighted the fact that reading is critical to the development of any nation. She reminded them that the doctors, lawyers, teachers of tomorrow are the students of today. Therefore, they must learn to read now they are young if they are to be great readers and leaders of tomorrow. They were encouraged to read at home, play, on the street and wherever they are, so that they can develop the skills that they need to make sense or meaning of print, symbols and signs.
