The students presented the prime minister with a wooden carving at a brief ceremony held at Cabinet Room on Thursday, April 15.

The students visited Cuba during the month of March for two weeks.

According to Janice King, a parent who accompanied the students, the prime minister was very instrumental in facilitating the trip. She said after the fund raising efforts and other donations, the group realised it was EC$70,000 short, threatening the non participation of some of the students.

She said the PM was approached for assistance, and not only did he respond quickly, but with EC$50,000, successfully. “He was able to raise those funds for us to go to Cuba,” she said.

King said, as if that was not enough, the prime minister turned up at the school to ensure that everything was in place for the trip. “There is no value you can put to it,” she added.

King thanked Prime Minister Gonsalves for his generous effort and humble approach to the situation. She said she was moved because other people who were approached advised that the trip should have been postponed to a later date.
