KCCU awards 55 with
Following words of encouragement from key speakers, fifty-five new entrants to secondary school were the recipients of bursaries and scholarships, as the Kingstown Cooperative Credit Union (KCCU) held its scholarship awards ceremony last Wednesday.{{more}}
The ceremony, which took place at the Peace Memorial Hall, in Kingstown, saw 49 students receiving cheques valued at $100, four receiving $500 and two receiving full scholarships valued $1,000 a year.
The scholarship is in its 13th year, and has to date dished out over $80,000 in funds.
In delivering his address, president of the KCCU Board of Directors, Michael John, challenged the young students to remain focused as they venture from primary to the various secondary schools, and urged them to aim to for the sky.
Also addressing the students were Education Officer in the Ministry of Education Elizabeth Walker, motivational speaker Gilbert Porter and Ronnia Durham, the scholarshipâs first female recipient.
This year, as part of the Unionâs 50th anniversary celebrations, one extra student was awarded a full scholarship. This yearâs winners are Camila Neptune, of the Questelles Government School, and Niasha Mofford, of the Kingstown Preparatory School.
Both students will attend the Girlsâ High School.
The $500 bursary award winners are Haquiem Alexander and Alparo Jacobs, of the Lowmans Windward Anglican School, Dwayneth Richards, of the Kingstown Preparatory, and Odinga Williams, of the Cane End Government school.
24 students are currently in secondary schools, with scholarships from the KCCU. (JJ)
