The event was the St Vincent Grammar Schoolâs 100th Anniversary Cocktail Toast that was hosted by Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne last Saturday August 2 at Government House.
The event, which brought together former teachers and about 40 graduates of the school, from all walks of life and generations, was part of the year-long centenary celebrations, being held under the theme âWe dream, we hope, we rise.â
An open day/art exhibition/competition on September 19; a tree-planting ceremony, followed by a march through Kingstown and a centenary thanksgiving service at Victoria Park on September 21; a career showcase on September 24 and a concert on October 26 at the Peace Memorial Hall are all part of the celebrations which will cumulate with a grand finale at the Grammar School Grounds on December 20.
The 100th anniversary committee, which is spearheading the activities is lead by Margaret Leacock, former Headmaster of the school, who in 2000 made history by becoming the schoolâs first female Headmaster.
In his brief greeting at the cocktail, current Headmaster Frank Jones urged former students to get involved in the life of the school.
He said that there is a need for the Past Studentsâ association to be revived, saying that the current students need to be counseled and encouraged by the former students. (KJ)
