Children of Guardsman employees rewarded
Guardsman is a company concerned with security. Not only the security of property and persons, but also securing the education of its employeesâ children. At a handing-over ceremony on Tuesday, August 5th, Guardsman representatives handed over a scholarship and two bursaries to students poised to begin secondary education in the upcoming school term.{{more}}
Twelve-year-old Delroy Myers, a past student of the Lowmans Leeward Anglican School, was the recipient of this yearâs scholarship. Having placed 54th for Boys and 336th overall, Delroy will be attending the St. Martinâs Secondary School – something he seems to be looking forward to. An avid cricket fan, he cites his favourite cricketer as Chris Gayle, and related that he was â…happyâ to receive the $1,000 scholarship. His mother, Kathleen Jacobs, an employee of Guardsman, was also quite elated. âIâm quite content. Iâm happy!â she beamed. And it is no surprise that she is, given the steadily rising cost of education.
Two other students, Shadia Weekes and Akelia Gibson, received bursaries of $200 each to help with their school costs. Human Resources Officer Annetta Antoine explained that the bursaries, as well as the scholarships, were awarded to the children of Guardsman employees who sat the Common Entrance Examination. The bursaries are given to those children who, despite being successful at the examination, did not pass high enough to qualify for the scholarship, but still are in need of assistance.
Manager B.T Marksman related that it is always a pleasure being of assistance to Guardsman employees and their children. âIt allows them to be able to see Guardsman as a good corporate citizen.â He further explained that it not only assists the children and their parents but in the long term also assists the community.
Current Guardsman scholarship holders are Felicia Antoine, a student of the Girlsâ High School, and Suenique de Shong, of the St. Josephâs Convent Kingstown. (JSV)
