Police tracking traffic congestion as vehicle numbers increase
The Traffic Department of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) is said to be making every effort to manage traffic congestion across the country as the number of imported vehicles continues to increase.
Station Sergeant Wendell Corridon, in an interview with SEARCHLIGHT on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, said the increase in the number of vehicles has presented new challenges for traffic management, particularly in and around Kingstown where congestion has become a daily occurrence.
“We have noticed that there has been an influx of vehicles on our island, we have also recognized that there are parking issues around Kingstown on a daily basis.” He said one of the major contributors to traffic congestion is illegal parking, particularly within the capital, where vehicles occupying unauthorized spaces reduce the available roadway and create bottlenecks during peak traffic hours.
Corridon said traffic officers are deployed on a daily basis to monitor parking violations and take action against motorists who fail to comply with the traffic regulations. While enforcement remains an important part of the department’s responsibilities, the Station Sergeant said the police recognise that long-term solutions will require broader planning, and improvements to the country’s transportation infrastructure. He noted that the Traffic Department has already submitted recommendations to the relevant authorities as part of ongoing discussions on improving traffic flow throughout St Vincent and the Grenadines.
