Gunshots ring out in Arnos Vale as police try to apprehend man
People around the Massy Stores supermarket in Arnos Vale last Saturday, June 6, 2026 were startled when police officers opened fire on a vehicle with rental plates around 12:00 p.m (mid-day).
The person driving the vehicle, who reportedly is a Union Island man, is said to have fled the scene but not before shots fired from a police firearm, damaged parts of the vehicle including the rear windscreen. After the shooting, several shell casings were left in the area.
The man driving the vehicle later turned himself in to the police after which he was charged in relation to a traffic offence.
It is not known why the police fired on the rental vehicle, however, a member of the Public Relations and Complaints Department of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), who answered a telephone call on Monday, June 8, 2026 said that a report on the incident will soon be made public.
Social media had a mix of comments in relation to the shooting with one bystander stressing that the shots were discharged in a busy area and innocent people could have been killed, while some people are of the view that the action by the police was justified.
