Slater retains Fisherman of the Year title and lands $25,000 in prize money
Veteran fisher Eli Slater, landed some EC$25,000 in prize money along with other gifts as he was named Fisherman of the Year, at the 49th annual Fisherman’s Day celebrations held in Kingstown on May 25,2026.
Held under the theme, ‘Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,’ and the slogan, ‘Healthy Fish, Tasty Dish’ Slater, who won the title in 2025, also emerged as winner of the heaviest recorded catch of 929 pounds of fish.
In addition to his $25,000 cash prize, Slater received a seamoss package, courtesy the Seamoss Association; six bottles of engine oil; a compass; fishing supplies; a case of Hairoun product; a case of Village Ram; and a Samsung Galaxy S26 smartphone, compliments Flow.
Second place went to Oscar Richardson, who had a catch of 743 pounds. Richardson received a cash prize of $12,000; a raincoat; four bottles of engine oil; a compass; and fishing supplies Lamar Cordice secured third place with a catch of 567 pounds. Cordice received a cash prize of $7,000; a raincoat; a compass; and a $300 gift voucher from Lulleys Fishing Supplies.
Slater told SEARCHLIGHT that he was excited about his victory, “Because…it’s an event where a lot of fishers go out there and try to catch as much as they can, and if you come out as the winner…you’d feel very excited”.
Slater said his boat, ‘Angel’ was the only one to have used live jacks, while the other contestants used squid and troll.
“ I used a semi-long line. I used live bait to drift to the current and that attracts the fish,” explained the Clare Valley fisherman.
