Man to take ashes of his USA born wife to Soufriere
In 1971, on their first wedding anniversary, Alban Bacchus and his wife Carol, headed to the summit of La Soufrière Volcano and even though she was unwell, she refused to turn back, insisting she had to “climb a mountain” with him.
They made it, and at the summit, overlooking the quiet crater lake, the newly weds shared what Alban named “that famous kiss” and although ecstatic about making it to the top of the highest mountain in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), the couple did not forget to document the moment with a photograph.
This single photograph captured how they felt about each another and documented, not only the love they shared, but also their bond with SVG.
Now, 55 years later, at age 80, Alban Bacchus is returning to the same volcano, but on a sad note and without his beloved Carol. Carol passed away last August in the United States of America (USA) where she was born, and where the couple called home.
Bacchus is hoping to scatter Carol’s ashes on the mountain top, honouring her wish for part of her to rest on the ever-changing mountain she fell in love with.
“She was sick that day, you know, and she said, I’m not going home, and I have to climb a mountain with you. And we made it. We took our time, but we made it up there,” the widower recounted to SEARCHLIGHT last week, while noting that the kiss is a symbolic moment from his first anniversary climb to La Soufrière, while the photograph is a key emotional image in his life-story and marriage.
