NDP gov’t placing the nation’s airports high on their agenda
Airports are critical infrastructure for tourism and the economy, and with that in mind, the new administration has placed the nation’s airports high on its agenda.
This year, the Canouan airport is expected to see a major refurbishment, with Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday, announcing that a major capital investment of EC$146 million is provided in the national budget for runway and other airport improvements at that facility.
Speaking during a press conference on March 3, 2026 Dr. Friday said that improvements have already been made at the J.F Mitchell Airport on Bequia, while the Argyle International Airport (AIA) will also receive attention.
“I’m not just interested in the airport (on Bequia) because it’s pretty or because it was built by the NDP. It is an important part of our economic infrastructure. When it goes down, it affects people with hotels. It affects people who have made their plans for getting guests to come into the country, people who have made bookings to come to Bequia,” the Prime Minister said.
