Dr Ralph Gonsalves is Senior Advisor of ‘Repair’ Campaign
Former Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, is now a Senior Advisor and Elder for The Repair Campaign, lending his expertise to the regional reparations movement.
Dr. Gonsalves, who is now Opposition Leader in St Vincent and the Grenadines, has long been a strong advocate for reparations, and fortified the regional Reparations agenda while he served as Prime Minister.
A press release from the organization describes the veteran politician and lawyer as a prominent supporter of reparatory justice for the Caribbean who has been vocal about the lasting impacts of indigenous genocide, the transatlantic slave trade, and colonial exploitation.
The group also stated that throughout his political journey, Dr has been an advocate for social equity, economic reform, regional solidarity, and the rights of small island developing nations on the international stage.
Commenting on his new role with The Repair Campaign, Dr. Gonsalves said: “The case for reparatory justice is clear historically, morally, and legally. The Caribbean’s call is not for charity, but for justice and repair so that our people can enjoy the future they deserve, with decent homes for their families, good health, quality education, strong job prospects and fair wages”.
“Achieving meaningful reparatory justice for the Caribbean will require the sustained joint efforts of stakeholders at every level. As I enter a new chapter of my public service journey, I am proud to join The Repair Campaign and I look forward to collaborating with the CARICOM Reparations Commission, regional governments, advocacy groups and grassroots campaigners as we strengthen and progress our call for reparations,” he stated.
