Senior Citizens learning to go digital

Senior citizens are being urged to get on board with the digital transformation taking place in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) or face the consequences of falling victim to financial scams and other online security issues.

This advice came from Director of the National Center of Technological Innovation (NCTI), Petrus Gumbs, at the launch of the first ever Senior Citizens Digital Skills Literacy Programme being hosted by the National Public Library.

The first-time programme was launched on Monday, May 5, 2025 at the Kingstown library and will include instruction on email communication, use of social media, as well as online privacy and safety.

Director of the National Public Library, Archives and Documentation Services, Michelle King-Campbell said the programme will help participants to bridge the ‘digital divide’.

“We recognize that navigating the digital world can be particularly challenging for our senior citizens. From staying connected with loved ones to accessing essential services and shopping online, technology now plays an integral role in our daily lives. That is why the Senior Citizens Digital Skills Literacy Programme is so important. Our aim is to build your confidence, independence and comfort with technology in a supportive and friendly environment.”
