More than 100 turn out for Easter Kite Flying Competition

by EldontÉ Samuel

On Sunday, April 7, 2024, at the tarmac of the decommissioned ET Joshua Airport, kite flyers from across the country gathered for the annual Kite Flying competition. And while patrons enjoyed the day’s events, some stressed that not enough is being done to maintain the tradition that is prevalent around the Easter period.

Patrons told SEARCHLIGHT that they enjoyed the day’s activities; however few championed for more involvement in the kite flying tradition.

“People don’t really study kite flying like that any more. Back then it was a thing, but I guess now the young population prefer other things,” one father said.
He also felt the government could collaborate with persons who have knowledge in the art of kite flying to come up with ideas geared towards promoting the tradition. He, however, was pleased with the turnout, noting that it would have been better to “see more people come out and support these things”.
The scene at Arnos Vale on Sunday was one where spectators could differentiate between those who were there for the competition from those whose only aim was to get their kite in the air and watch it soar.

The event featured an array of creatively designed kites- a few KFC themed. Some of the kites attained such a high altitude that it was difficult to get a full view of the designs.

There were other fliers who, having got their kites up to a fair altitude, then anchored their thread and went to take in other activities associated with the event. There were several stalls erected on the tarmac.

Flying high above 101 other competitors was Sofie St John’s kite which also was the judges’ choice as having the most creative kite material. There were winners of other categories such as the Best Business Kite. The Under 19 Winner went to Omari Browne. Joshua Crozier was the runner up in this category. In the Under 12 segment, Soriah John took the top spot.

The award for being the oldest flyer went to Kingsley Davis, 81 years old; while the youngest flyer was little Dredon Greaves, eight months old. Leroy Llewlyn won for having the most colourful kite, while Dale Thomas won Best KFC Kite.

Nathan Lawrence won for having the most innovative kite. Clement Fergus and Family were the largest kite flying family, while Solomon Stewart had the smallest kite that flew well.

The competition was judged based on craftsmanship, visual appeal, balance, proportion and fly-ability as well as originality, creativity and theme. A well rounded kite should have been able to function properly while also being visually appealing.

KFC St Vincent has been the sponsor of the competition for the last two years after taking over from Karib Cable. They hope to help revive this tradition. The competition boasted a total of 102 competitors.
