SVG slumps to worst place in FIFA’s world rankings

Despite the continuous mouthings by the top official of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) that this country is enjoying its best days under the current executive’s tenure, SVG has plunged to its worst place in FIFA’s rankings.

When the rankings were released last Thursday, it showed that SVG was positioned 177 out of 209 countries in FIFA’s set-up.

This beat the previous worst of 169, which was achieved in November 2011.{{more}}

The November 24, 2016 position showed a dip of 15 places from the October rankings, and the new ranking is the result of a steady decline over the last 11 months.

In the month of January, the ranking was 143; February – 144; March – 141; April – 146; May – 141; June – 148, while in July and August, SVG ranked 156 on both occasions. In September, we stood at 164.

St Vincent and the Grenadines men’s senior team has not won a single match for 2016, losing all six international matches played.

Vincy Heat, as the outfit is called, was beaten 3-2 and 6-0 by Trinidad and Tobago, as well as by the USA 6-0 and Guatemala 9-3, in the CONCACAF 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

St Vincent and the Grenadines was also booted out of the Scotia Bank Caribbean Cup, defeated by Suriname 2-1 and by St Kitts and Nevis, 1- 0.

FIFA.com states that the rankings are calculated using the logic: “Any team that does well in world football wins points which enable it to climb the world ranking. A team’s total number of points over a four-year period is determined by adding the average number of points gained from matches during the past 12 months and the average number of points gained from matches older than 12 months (depreciates yearly).”

St Vincent and the Grenadines’ best FIFA ranking of 73rd was achieved in October 2007, during the last month of the St Clair Leacock led executive.(RT)
