Two Vincentian motorcyclists die in separate accidents

Kenron Leon Sutherland, the motorcyclist who lost his life on Independence Day, Tuesday, October 27, has been described by family members as an extremely loving man and a good father.

“He is my father, my best friend and since I heard about his death I cannot sleep or eat,” said Samuel’s daughter Monica Glasgow {{more}}from her home in Georgetown on Wednesday evening.

Glasgow said that her father’s death had driven her blood pressure up and she couldn’t say much to the SEARCHLIGHT, but offered that she misses her father very much, as he meant a lot to her.

Glasgow’s mother, Sylvanie Samson, said that she knew Sutherland for over 40 years and she supports her daughter’s claim that he was a wonderful man.

She revealed that he started riding about two years ago.

“I was at home around 6 p.m. and I got a call that he had crashed, so I went with my daughter to the hospital,” recalled Samson. She said that when they arrived at the hospital, the doctor said that they had tried to revive him, but were unsuccessful.

Sutherland, who lived in the United States for a period of time before returning home, succumbed to his injuries while at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH). Samson said that the father of three daughters had a head injury, a dislocated hip and damage to other parts of his body, including one of his arms.

“He was a straightforward man who spoke his mind, but he was a good man,” said Samson of the deceased, who was born on February 5, 1955.

The traffic department of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) said in a release that they have launched an investigation into the death of Sutherland, who is from Georgetown.

According to the police, Sutherland crashed into a mini-bus at Diamond at around 4 p.m. and preliminary investigations show that he was travelling from Arnos Vale to Georgetown when he met a truck that had stopped in the corner at Diamond gap, the route which heads to the landfill.

It is reported that the truck had stopped on the left hand side of the road, the same section of the road that Sutherland was travelling on. Reports claim that Sutherland passed the truck, lost control and crashed into mini-bus, HL 594, driven by Lester Jackson of Diamond, which had already stopped. He sustained serious injuries.

Sutherland was the second motorcyclist to die in SVG within a five-day period.

On Friday, Paul Liverpool died in Bequia at around 6.50 a.m., when his motorbike crashed into a coconut tree in Friendship.

Liverpool was a 37-year-old machine operator who was originally from Georgetown, but lived on the Grenadine island. He is said to have broken his neck on impact.

There have been 12 road accidents this year, which have resulted in the deaths of 20 persons.
