Blondie Bird and Friends still flying high in Mas

For the Blondie Bird and Friends mas band, it was definitely a case of ‘we came, we saw and we conquered’ at this year’s Junior Carnival competition – claiming Junior Band of the Year, with firsts in all categories except the Uptown Competition.

On Saturday, June 27, Victoria Park came alive in a wash of colours and styles,{{more}} as 13 bands proudly paraded their designs, but were pipped to the post by the top band’s ‘Illusion – Never See, Come See’ 2015 presentation.

Blondie Bird and Friends, led by band leader Elroy ‘Blondie Bird’ Boyd, walked away with first and second place in the Individuals (age 5 – 9) category with ‘Magic’ (1st) and ‘Illusion of Grandeur’ (2nd). The band also took first and second place spots in the Individuals (age 10 – 15) category with ‘Optical Illusion’ (1st) and ‘One Moment in Time’ (2nd).

Additionally, Blondie Bird and Friends dominated the Junior Section category – scooping first and second place with ‘One Moment in Time’ and ‘Musical Illusion’, respectively. In the Uptown Competition, the band had to settle for second place, edged out by SVG Players International Mas Band with its ‘Masquerade’ presentation.

In the Junior Queen competition, Blondie Birds and Friends placed first with ‘Daydream’; SVG Players International placed second with ‘Imagination’; Digicel Nelson Bloc took third with ‘Vincy Heat’; and ‘Hansel and Gretel’ secured fourth place for High Voltage Mas Production.

In the Junior King competition, Blondie Bird and Friends again dominated with ‘Hand Shadows’, while SVG Players International placed second with ‘Rise of the Phoenix’. Third place went to Digicel Nelson Bloc for ‘Soca Warrior,’ and fourth place went to High Voltage Mas Production’s ‘Oompa Loompa’.

Second place in the Junior Band of the Year was taken by Digicel Nelson Bloc with ‘Soccer – the Game of the People’; third went to SVG Players International with ‘Masquerade’; fourth place, High Voltage Mas Production’s ‘Candy World’; fifth place, Dragons Cultural Organization’s ‘50th Anniversary Celebration’; and sixth was Tribes Mas Band with ‘An Explosion of Colours’.

The other results were as follows:

Individuals (5 – 9)

3rd – ‘Masquerade’ by SVG Players International

4th – ‘Skittles’ by Tribes Mas Band

Individuals (10 – 15)

3rd – ‘Gem of the Antilles’ by SVG Players International

4th – ‘Kiss’ by High Voltage Mas Production

Uptown Competition

3rd – ‘Soccer: the game of the People’ by Digicel Nelson Bloc

4th – ‘50th Anniversary Celebration’ by Dragons Cultural Organisation

5th – ‘Songs from Machel Montano’ by Lynx Mas Band

6th – ‘Candy World’ by High Voltage Mas Production

This was the second year in a row that Blondie Bird and Friends was adjudged Junior Carnival Band of the Year; and they will undoubtedly be looking to replicate last year’s first place success at Mardi Gras too, which takes place on Tuesday, July 7. (JSV)
