Vincentian called up to West Indies Cricket team for second test

Vincentian and Windwards left arm seam bowler Kenroy Peters has been called up by the West Indies Cricket Board panel of selectors for the test series currently taking place in South Africa.

His call up is cover for Kemar Roach, who will miss the second test, which begins on December 26, {{more}}because of an ankle injury sustained during the West Indies innings and 220-run defeat in the first test, which ended last Saturday.

Peters, 32, was the leading wicket taker in the 2014 WICB four-day regional tournament, with 40 scalps, at an average of 12.75 runs apiece.

And, in this year’s inaugural Professional Cricket League, Peters has so far taken 13 wickets at 19.38 in the four matches he has appeared in for the Windwards Volcanoes.

Inclusive of his tally, is a fiver against Guyana last month.

Peters, who is yet to play for the West Indies senior team, has played for the West Indies B team, and West Indies Under-19.

In all, he has captured 190 wickets in 62 matches at the first class level.

Peters, who plays for Guardian General Saints in the local competitions, under the auspices of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, was named among the Five Cricketers for this year, 2014.

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association (SVGCA), in a release, congratulated Peters on his selection.

And Peters, responding to news of his selection, told public relations officer of the SVGCA Samantha Lynch: “It’s such a pleasure getting a call from WICB selector indicating I was selected to represent West Indies in South Africa. It’s the third best news for the year. This has been my childhood dream and this is true testimony that hard work and discipline, with the help of God all things are possible. I want to thank my family, friends and supporters who stuck by me and always encouraged me to aim for the stars and never give up. My praise is unto God.”

President of the SVGCA Kishore Shallow also expressed his excitement.

“Petey is one of the smartest and hardest working cricketers I know; he deserves this opportunity, and I am totally elated for him.”

He further stated “this is a great start to our movement of the strategic plan, which reflects the intention to produce the best players in the region and to have our players consistently on the West Indies teams.”

The SVGCA executive also wished Peters all the best, as “he was knocking on the West Indies door for some time now.”

Peters leaves the state to join the team in South Africa today, Tuesday, December 23.
