Calder resident dies after being struck on head

The Yearwood family of Calder say they are shocked and bewildered at the killing of 28-year-old Desborne “Des” Yearwood.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the young man are still sketchy, but SEARCHLIGHT understands that on Monday, October 20, at about 4:30 p.m.,{{more}} the construction worker was struck on the head with a blunt object, while on his way to a shop in the neighbourhood.

He died subsequently at the Levi Latham Health Centre in Mesopotamia.

In an interview on Wednesday, Silborne Yearwood, brother of the deceased, said he was returning home from work on Monday afternoon when he received the devastating news that his brother had been killed.

“We normally go to work together every day, but that day he had a matter at the Family Court, so he didn’t go to work…When I coming home now, I hear dem say (alleged attacker’s name) knock down Des. After that, I go Mespo hospital and see my brother dead ‘pon the bed,” a dejected Silborne said.

He said Desborne, the father of a five-year-old and a four-year-old, was not known to interfere with people and stated that he is unaware that his brother had any altercation with anyone leading up to his death.

“Only God alone know. Me and he grow like twins. My brother never used to trouble people. He used to just work hard. My mother is ah sickly woman with she heart and is only God alone keeping she right now,” Silborne added, as he stared into the distance with tears in his eyes.

Osborne Yearwood, another brother of the deceased, said he was home with his mother when he heard a noise about 100 yards from where they live.

“When me go up to the top of the road now, me see Des pon de ground, so me run come back go tell me old queen. Me say, mommy, them kill Des,” Osborne recalled.

He added that when his mother went to the scene, she tried speaking with Des, but all he did was groan.

“Imagine me and he plant peas and all thing the same Monday and he been tell me he going by the shop when the thing happened. He wasn’t a troublesome person at all. I don’t think he had anything with anybody,” Osborne said.

When contacted, Inspector Franklyn Williams of the Criminal Records Office (CRO) told SEARCHLIGHT that one man is in custody assisting with investigations into the matter.

He further noted that they are at the preliminary stage of their investigations.
