Hanif Forbes found not guilty of murder of O’Briens Valley man

Lawyer Ronald Marks, does not believe that his client Hanif Forbes, should have been charged in the first place after he was found not guilty this week for the murder of Joshua “Cabbage” Pompey.

Forbes left the High Court #1 a free man on Tuesday, July 18, after a 12-member jury found him not guilty of the charge of murder after deliberating for almost three hours.

He was standing trial in connection with the January, 22, 2022 shooting death of Joshua “Cabbage” Pompey of O’Briens Valley, Georgetown.

The 41 year old Forbes of Spring Village, was also freed of four additional charges: using a firearm to aid in the commission of an offence; possession of a firearm with an intent to injure; burglary; and assault against Lekeitha Harris Pompey.

Marks told SEARCHLIGHT that he is pleased with the verdict which has reassured his faith in the justice system.

“I’m satisfied with the outcome. If the outcome was otherwise, it would have caused me great concern. I would have started to question- if the judiciary actually works, but clearly we can see in this case that it does work because to my mind, this is an innocent man and he should not have even been charged in the first place.”

He added that Forbes’ family has made the entire process efficient and feasible for him.

“I got to know his family and from the very onset, I can see that he’s a decent man from a decent family … and I think it made a difference in the matter, coming forward quickly, being heard quickly and justice being dealt with.”

Marks also said that there were numerous contradictions in Harris-Pompey’s testimony which would have led to the verdict.

He pointed to inconsistencies in the evidence Harris-Pompey gave to the police and what she presented in court concerning Forbes.

The trial commenced on July 21, at the High Court #1 where Justice Brian Cottle presides.

Forbes was on remand since he was charged on January 25, 2022.

After one year and almost six months behind bars, the Spring Village resident was free to go home and spend time with his children, something which Marks told SEARCHLIGHT Forbes is elated to do.

The body of Joshua“Cabbage” Pompey was found in his vehicle on January 22, 2022, with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the head.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Sejilla Mcdowall led the case for the crown and was assisted by counsel Renee Simmons. Forbes was represented by Ronald Marks.
