Our Diabetes mission

As most of you know, for the past four years I have been blessed to be a part of the Diabetes medical mission, led by the Patsy Douglas Youth Empowerment Foundation. Its founder, AnnMarie Lee Wilkins, is also a native Vincentian, and started this mission in addition to her work stateside.{{more}}

During the past four years our team has visited clinics in Georgetown, Layou, Mespo, Kingstown, Chateaubelair and Bequia. There have been health fairs, a radio call-in event and educational talks. We have seen new faces and old friends at return visits to the clinics since that initial mission.

Usually we would return annually in March or early April; however, I am sad to say that this year our mission is on hold. Multiple events and factors have led to this difficult decision to cancel the mission trip for 2014, and instead plan on our next return, in 2015. We plan next year to, of course, continue our planned clinic visits, but likely also focus on the growth of a dedicated pediatric diabetes clinic, as well as expansion of other projects that we have envisioned along with our medical colleagues in SVG.

However, for this year, 2014, we will not be entirely absent. The Patsy Douglas Youth Foundation has already provided medical supplies early this year, after the rains proved to be so destructive during the holiday season in SVG. In addition, we will be in contact with our medical colleagues to provide further supplies and educational materials later this year, while building on foundations of the projects we will continue to work on for next year.

We will miss seeing all of you! As I write this, I am sad thinking there will be no physical mission this, year, but rest assured our team remains dedicated to the mission and its purpose. We look forward to seeing you in 2015.

Stay safe and healthy Vincies!
