Sports Official wants communities to get moving with sports
GENERAL SECRETARY OF the St Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee (SVGOC), Keith Joseph, wants to see every community in the country get involved in physical activities.
Hence, he is advocating for various communities to have their own Sports Fair. Joseph stated position follows the staging of the second edition of a sports fair, put on by the Athletes Commission of the SVGOC at the Diamond track facility.
“It will be a good idea to reach out to the different communities to organize something like this, with three of four sports gather in one community and introduce the sports because at the end of the day what we want is a healthier nation,” he pointed out.
Highlighting the fact that sports and recreation promote good health, Joseph noted, “What we want to do is make sure that every community in St Vincent and the Grenadines becomes involved in sports, become involved in recreation, become involved in sports for all so that healthy lifestyles begin with your engagement in running, jumping and throwing”.
Looking at the overall impact of the continuous engagement of communities, Joseph said “The first impact is to get people to understand that sports is important, and sports is a part of life. Secondly, that they can do careers in sports; they can move to different levels. They can represent the country in different capacities. The idea is to make sports intelligible, and it is
not just running around”.
Last Saturday’s sports fest had ‘ready done’ participation, as it coincided with the annual relay fest staged by Team Athletics SVG.
Saturday’s sports fest saw affiliates of the SVGOC giving demonstrations of their respective disciplines, providing information and encouraging participation or trying a new sport.
For some disciplines there were instant results as some persons who attend the sports fair as some persons, having tried the discipline, signed up for continuing training.
The fair also had a health and wellness component and pertinent information was provided to curious attendees.
