Thirteen-year-old makes Carifta Standard
THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Ethan Kent, has made the Under-17 Boys High Jump standard as set by the Technical Department of Team Athletics SVG for the 2016 Junior Carifta Games.
Kent, who is mainly known for his prowess as a junior tennis player, cleared the bar at 1.80m last Saturday, January 17, at the 2026 Pamenos Ballantyne Distance and Jumps Classic, held at the Sir Vincent Beache Stadium at Diamond Estate thus attaining the minimum qualification standard.
Athletes must be 14 years old to compete at the regional age group Games.
Team Athletics, though, can seek permission from the governing body for the Carifta Games, the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC), should Kent consistently perform at that height and above during the season.
Kent was one of three high jumpers who made the set standards at last Saturday’s meet.
His fellow St Vincent Grammar School and Under-17 athlete, Evonte Nimblette also cleared the bar at 1.80m; and the SVG Community College’s Trevel Sylvan, made the Boys Under-20 standard with a one- off 1.90m jump.
Kent, Nimblette and Sylvan thus join J’avair Cato, who on January 9 and 10, at the Pure Water/ Danny Williams Jamaica College Meet held at the Ashenheim Stadium, Kingston, Jamaica, Cato met the standard in the Triple Jump and Long Jump.
He leapt to 14.85m in the Triple Jump and 6.97m in the Long Jump.
Team Athletics SVG’s minimum Carifta Qualifying standard for the Under-20 Boys Triple Jump is 14.70 and 6.81m for the Long Jump.
All qualifiers will go through a selection process before the final team is announced.
The 2026 Junior Carifta Games takes place at the Kirani James Stadium, Grenada over the Easter weekend, April 4 to 6.
