High Octane National Championships this weekend
The Wendell Hercules National Championships this weekend, July 19 and 20, 2025, at the Diamond Track Facility, promise to serve up high octane events.
Staged by Team Athletics SVG, the governing body for Track and Field here in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), the two- day championships on Saturday and Sunday, for the first time brings together several overseas-based athletes.
This is a stipulation by World Athletics (WA), whereby athletes will no longer be required to meet qualification standards, but will be ranked according to their performances over the season.
Hence, each country’s national championships will carry the most ranking points if they desire to compete at the World Championships, in Tokyo, Japan, in September, 2025.
On day one, Saturday, 34 events are carded, including the much anticipated final of the women and men’s 100m.
These finals are set for 1:40 and 1:45 p.m, with the latter featuring the St Vincent and the Grenadines all time 100m record holder, Earl Simmons, who will face the likes of Mc Kish Compton, AJ Delpesche, Keo Davis, and J’ Mar Saunders, among others.
Day two of the championships will feature 23 events.
Day one will going at 9:30 a.m, and Sunday’s start is set for 11:00 a.m.
The championships have been named in honour of former St Vincent and the Grenadines middle distance runner, the late Wendell “ Steel Donkey” Hercules.
