St Vincent and the Grenadines is currently hosting the 14th leg of the King’s Baton Relay which replaces the Queen’s Baton Relay, that over the years, has served as a prelude to the four -year cycle of the Commonwealth Games.

Hence, the unveiling of the St Vincent and the Grenadines version of the Baton, took place last Wednesday, June, 11, 2025, when the residents of Mustique had the first public view of it.

The Baton, reflecting the heritage and culture of St Vincent and the Grenadines, decorated with national symbols and depicting the effervescence of the people, was taken on a tour of the Grenadine Island.

A run from the Plant Nursery to the Mustique Primary School, where a cultural presentation also took place, formed the major activities on the island.

Graced with the presence of representatives of national sporting organisations, Nadira Morgan (Squash), Afi Lucas (Tennis), Tracey Byron (Cricket), and Matthew Ballah (Swimming), the baton went through its route. The next stop for the baton is a tour to schools on the Windward side of the mainland, today, Friday, June 13. The tour culminates on Saturday, June 14, with a river and beach clean-up at Bridgetown, Biabou, involving representatives from affiliates of the SVGOC.

The river/ beach plastic clean-up will be done in partnership with the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN). This as the CYN has partnered with the Commonwealth of Jersey (CGA), joining forces to combat plastic pollution.

Saturday’s activities end the Caribbean tour of the King’s Baton Relay; the continent of Africa is the next stop. They will be followed in order by countries in Asia, Oceania, the Americas and finally, Europe, spanning 74 countries on the 500-day tour of the baton.

The King’s Baton Relay is a precursor event to the 2026 Commonwealth Games set for Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 2.
