Young sailor continues his philanthropic efforts

HE MAY BE at the tender age of 14, but Vincentian, Kai Marks-Dasent is exhibiting a philanthropic mindset. This, as the young sailor last Saturday, May 17, 2025, completed an 18-mile solo sail from the mainland to Mustique as part of a fundraising campaign for hurricane-affected students from Union Island Secondary School, and also to aid the Vincy sailing team.

His latest effort took him three hours and ten minutes, as he enjoyed a 16knot trade wind, but had to contend with the presence of the sargassum sea weed along the way.

Commenting on his efforts, Marks- Dasent said, “This is about giving back. Sailing has taught me so much and I want to use what I’ve learned to support other young people”.

The Mustique venture was a prelude to Marks-Dasent’s 42-mile sail to Union Island planned to take place tomorrow, May 24, 2025.

According to a release from the St Vincent and the Grenadines Sailing Association, the Union Island sail by Marks-Dasent, is “to help students affected by Hurricane Beryl pay towards their CSEC exam fees (Class of 2025/2026)”.
