Guyana Women dedicate regional cricket title to Adrianna Younge

“This is for Adrianna” shouted captain of the Guyana Women’ Cricket Team, Shemaine Campbelle, as she lifted the championship trophy above her head at the prize-giving ceremony last Sunday night May 11, 2025 at the Arnos Vale Cricket Ground in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). The ceremony brought the curtains down on the 2025 Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’ T20 Blaze Cricket Tournament .

Campbelle later told SEARCHLIGHT that her team strove to win this their first ever regional women’ cricket title, and decided to dedicate it to Andrianna Younge and her grieving family. Younge, an 11 year old Guyanese girl who was reported missing on April, 23, 2025 while at a family gathering at a hotel in the Guyana capital, Georgetown, was found dead hours later in a swimming pool on the hotel’s premises which those looking for the child said they had earlier searched, according to Guyana news reports. The child’s parents, and thousands of Guyanese have rejected the conclusion that she died by drowning.

The Guyana Women lifted the trophy following a bruising take-no-prisoner final between Guyana Women and Jamaica Women; both teams ending their inning on 122 for 5.

The batting for Jamaica was led by Chedean Nation with 35; Abigail Bryce 32 not out; and Jodian Morgan 27. Bowling for Guyana Women, Nyia Latchman snatched 2 wickets for 11 runs; Ashmini Munisar had 2 for 26; and Cherry-Ann Fraser picked up 1 for 32.

Replying, Guyana Women were led by skipper Shemaine Campbelle, who made 54, and Realeanna Grimmond 46, as the South Americans reached 122 for 5 in a frantic last over in which 7 was needed for outright victory.

The teams then headed to the super over but had to wait, as the rain threatened to spoil the party. Guyana Women opened their super over account with Shemaine Campbelle and Shabika Gajnabi; but there was a further delay when the Jamaica skipper and wicket-keeper,Rashada Williams, was struck in her head by a ball and had to receive attention.

When the action resumed, Guyana Women reached 8 for 1, losing the wicket of Gajnabi for 3. Campbelle remained 3 not out, and Realeanna Grimmond 2 not out.

In response, with fans for both combatants in high spirits, Jamaica lost the prize wicket of Chinelle Henry for nought, caught by Gajnabi off the bowling of Latchman. The Jamaica Women’ super over effort ended when Chedean Nation was run out for 2, Abigail Bryce was left standing at the wicket on 1 as they were only able to score 3 for 2; Guyana Women therefore winning by 5 runs in the super over.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, SVG’s Jeannillea Glasgow was named in the CWI 15-member squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of England to take place from May 21 to June 8, 2025.

Glasgow is expected to play a key role with her medium pace bowling now that Jamaica Women’ Chinelle Henry was not selected due to an injury sustained during the just concluded 2025 CWI Women’ T20 Blaze Cricket Tournament.

The tour includes three T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals to be played at several venues across the country. The West Indies Women departed for England on May 13, with the first T20 scheduled for May 21.
