National Sports Associations pay tribute to Dyke Cato
National associations have been paying tribute to Dyke Cato, former national cricketer, cricket scorer and analyst, teacher, cricket administrator, national cricket selector, cricket coach- among other titles in the wake of his death last Tuesday May 14, 2024, after a brief illness. Cato was 44 years old.
The SVG Cricket Association Inc. which Cato served in various capacities, in extending condolences to his family and friends said: “ Words cannot give an accurate representation of the contributions that Dyke has made to sports, national development, and the lives of many Vincentians…He was not only a national player, but also a coach, manager and mentor….His personality and willingness to help others has made a difference in the lives of so many persons”.
The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) also paying tribute, referred to Cato as a distinguished former national cricketer.
The Federation said in a release, “ It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) announces the passing of Mr. Dyke Cato, an esteemed national cricketer, a revered sport organiser, and a beloved coordinator of sports. “Mr. Cato’s unwavering dedication to the world of sports has been a source of inspiration for countless athletes and sports enthusiasts across the nation”.
The release added that Cato’s contributions to the development of cricket in St. Vincent and the
Grenadines were immense, and his legacy as a player and a leader will be cherished forever.
“Dyke Cato was not only known for his remarkable achievements on the cricket field, but also for his passion for nurturing young talent and his vision for sports in our country,” the Federation stated.
“His efforts in coordinating events and galvanizing the community around sports have left an indelible mark on our nation’s athletic landscape.”
The Federation’s president, Otashie Spring added that the loss of Cato is a profound one for the entire sporting community in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Spring noted that while Cato was a titan in the cricket world, his influence was felt across all sports disciplines and his ethos of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship are values that resonate deeply within the Football Federation.
Cato was a close friend of the SVGFF, and often provided logistical support and other services during international football matches.
An off-spinner who gave years of commitment to local cricket club Radcliffe, Cato, who worked at the Division of Physical Education and Sports at the time of his death, was a supervisor at the Diamond Track Facility.
