Mayreau junior sailors pull off successful regatta

The Mayreau junior sailors this year, they teamed up with the Bank of St Vincent and the Grenadines (BOSVG) and other sponsors to once again host a successful regatta that also involved sailors from Canouan and Bequia. Held over two days- April 27 and 28, 2024, the boats sailed from Saline bay and also ended at that point, a release from a support group states.

The young sailors raced in the Optimist boats (locally called box boats); Sunfish; Topaz; and 14-foot, 18 foot and 28-foot traditional Double-ender working boats. The results are:

The most outstanding sailor was 14 year old Jerimiah Forde from Mayreau, who pipped the other 37 competitors in the regatta that emphasised sportsmanship, teamwork and performance.

Alick Daniel from Bequia, received a special trophy for sportsmanship for his many years of supporting Mayreau’s junior sailors.

There were eight sailors in the Optimist class, five of whom were from Mayreau and three from Canouan.

Mayreau’s Jerimiah Forde placed first; 14 year old Morya Forde from Mayreau, the only female competitor in this class placed second; and 12 year old Josiah Creese from Mayreau came third.

In the fun relay held for all sailors in the Optimist class comprising one sailor from Mayreau paired with one sailor from Canouan in each team, 14 year old Stephon Jacobs (Canouan), and nine year old Devonnie Haywood (Mayreau), placed first. In second place was the team comprising 16 year old Joshua Mitchell (Canouan), and 14 year old Morya Forde

(Mayreau); and in third position was the team of 13 year old Antoine Snagg (Canouan), and nine year old Samiah Haywood (Mayreau).

Four boats competed in the Sunfish class and the results were an all Mayreau affair. Placing first was 14 year old Azeem Forde of Mayreau; in second place was 24 year old Stephon Forde of Mayreau; and 34 year old Jamal Forde also of Mayreau placed third.

There was a single boat in the Hobie Cat class raced by Hudson Lewis from Mayreau, who took the prize.

Two boats competed in the Topaz class, with 12 year old Jarvon Bartholomew and John Forde, from Mayreau taking the first place; while 27 year old Kimiah Thomas and 24 year old Keithron DeRoche from Mayreau taking position number two.

In the 14’ Double-ender working boat class in which four boats competed, Bad Feelings from Mayreau, captained by Samuel Forde placed first; God’s Angel from Mayreau, captained by 24 year old Keithron DeRoche placed second; and in the third spot was Purple Star from Mayreau, captained by 19 year old Norfrick Baptiste.

A single boat, Camille, was entered in the 18’ Double-ender working boat class captained by 14 year old KJ Ollivierre who took the top prize.

In the 28’ Double-ender working boat class there were two entries. In first place was No Offence from Bequia, captained by 17 year old Orian Ollivierre; and in second position was Sew Long from Bequia, captained by 18 year old Kelron Farrell. The Mayreau junior sailors have gratefully acknowledged all the sailors from Bequia and Canouan who travelled to Mayreau to make this event special; all those who turned up to watch the action and show their support and all the sponsors who so enthusiastically accepted the opportunity to be associated with such a positive event.
