Shafiqua Maloney reels off more wins and records

Top Vincentian female athlete, Shafiqua Maloney, continued her prolific 2024 season with double wins at the John Mc Donnell Invitational at Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA, last Friday April 19, 2024.

Maloney won both the Women’s 400 and 1500m, setting new St Vincent and the Grenadines records.

In the 400, she clocked 50.94s, to erase the previous national best of 51.23s, set by Kineke Alexander in 2014.

Most significantly, Maloney has qualified for the event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, as well as set a meet record.

She returned later on Friday, to win the 1500m in a time of 4:14.60, breaking her own record of 4:15.30 that she set six days prior at the Tom Jones Invitational, staged in Gainsville, Florida.

On April 13, Maloney had broken Bigna Samuel’s 1500m, 30 year record of 4:20.78.

Maloney went unbeaten indoors in three races in the 800m, including establishing a new national record of 1:58.69 at the Tyson Invitational on February 10, 2024, and gaining qualification for this year’s Olympics.

Outdoors, Maloney set a new meet record 2:00.25 to win the 800m at the Texas Relays on March 28.

She then established a new national record in the 600m at the Miramar Invitational on April 6, 2024, in 1:23.80.

Also, on April 13, Maloney ran 1:59.97 for victory at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville in the 800m.
