Fourteen named for Windwards Under-19 Cricket tournament

Luke Wilson will lead the St Vincent and the Grenadines Under-19 male Cricket team to the 2024 Winlott Inc Super-50 Cricket Tournament in Dominica which opens runs from April 7 to 14, 2024.

Wilson who skippered the team to second place in the 2023 edition, will have as his vice-captain seasoned player, Solomon Bascombe, who missed last year’s tournament because of injury.

Like Wilson, also returning from last year’s sojourn to St Lucia are Kirtney Franklyn, Kodi Grant, Javon Richardson, Watson Seaton, Devonte Mc Dowall, Joe Williams, Elran Glasgow and Kevin Shallow.

Tasting this contest for the first time are Jawayne Adams, Jorden Charles, Damali Phillips, and Kevin Joseph, who complete the fourteen.

The reserves are Reynolly Hillocks, Ramon Johnson, Ian Gonsalves and Dexter Baynes.

Parnell Browne as manager and Elron Lewis, head coach comprise the management unit.

Given the make up of the Vincentian outfit head coach Lewis is positive that they can do well.

“ I am confident that this Under-19 team will do well… I am confident that we can go to Dominica and come out with the best possible results.”

Outlining the preparations going into the tournament, Lewis said that they started with 24 players.

“We had three practice matches before we cut the squad to 18 players, then finally the 14.

“ …we have different types of practice sessions…we were also engaged in some technical work,” Lewis explained.

He noted that the strength of the team is in the bowling department, citing the likes of Bascombe, Wilson, Mc Dowall, Glasgow, Charles Franklyn and Seaton, as the fulcrum.

“We have different variety in the bowling,” he noted, “we have right arm fast, left arm fast…we have leg break, we have a left arm spinner and right arm spinner.”

He was less confident with respect to the batting department, but believe collectively, they can pull things together.

The Vincentian contingent leaves for Dominica, tomorrow, Saturday, April 6 for the tournament.
