Volleyball Executive encouraged to be inclusive

Former president of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Volleyball Association(SVGVA) Shaun Young has cautioned the new executive of the organisation to be inclusive.

Young’s comments came last Monday January 29, as the Gary Matthias-led executive was installed unopposed at a Special General Meeting held at the St Vincent Grammar School.

In a tone of sadness and regret, Young said: “I would like to also impress that the (new) executive must respect the general body … I think it was one of the shortcomings of the previous administration, hence this is why we are where we are today”.

Monday’s meeting was hastily arranged to carry out the electoral process after a spate of resignations from the previous administration, headed by Eardley Martin.

Elected in February 2022, the Martin-led executive lasted for just under two years of their four-year mandate.

Furthermore, last Monday’s meeting saw only two clubs- Gremlins and Country Roots- eligible to participate in the elections as they were the only units that registered teams for the proposed National Volleyball Championships, which was originally set to open this Saturday February 4.

Lamenting that particular matter, Young said “It is a sad day for Volleyball that we had to take two clubs to constitute an executive …I think what we had seen in Volleyball in the past has gone down the drain and this executive has been tasked with a job of building from scratch again”.

However, he gave guidance and praise to the incoming administrators.

“You have to try to get the club structure up and running…the fact that I am seeing so many youngsters here today is testament that you know the importance of the clubs… I am happy that we see a lot of young individuals on the executive and we can look forward to great things,” Young impressed.

Apart from Matthias, the new executive of the SVGVA includes Alicia Glasgow – vice-president; Malika Joseph – secretary; Gasnel Straker – treasurer; along with D’ Andre Quashie, Hollyann George and Nikita Campbell as committee members.
