Coaches give thumbs up to Trinbago Relays

Chester Morgan, Track and Field coach of the Barrouallie Secondary School, and Rawlson Morgan who holds the same position at the St Vincent Grammar School, have given the 2024 Trinbago Schools Relays, a big thumbs up.

The two coaches, whose institutions were part of the one- day event held at the Haseley Crawford Stadium on Thursday January 18, 2024, agreed that the outing helped with the assessment levels of their athletes.

“ For us it was a good outing as our athletes were able to see a different level of competition, and the entire atmosphere will augur well for their athletics as well as their personal development,” Morgan told SEARCHLIGHT.

“ They were able to interact with other athletes from other Caribbean countries [and] get to know their training regimen. But what was enlightening for the girls was the response they got from local school children, who sought their autographs. That was something they are not accustomed to here in St Vincent and the Grenadines”.

Morgan, was equally pleased saying “The all-expense paid Trinbago Relays were good for us as it helped us gauge our athletes not only for the upcoming Inter- Secondary Schools’ meet, but as we should be venturing out to the Penn Relays this year.”

“ Interestingly, our time of 42.80s represents one the school’s best clocking in the 4 x 100 metres. We enjoyed the fact that we were able to compete against other schools in the region, and the Trinbago Schools relays were perfect for us as it filled for the Barbados Relays Fair which is not on this year, as we have been regular participants over the years,” Morgan added.

“ We will definitely be making another appearance to the Schools Relays in Trinidad and Tobago in the near future.”

In the results, the Barrouallie Secondary secured one gold and two silver. The school won the Girls 4 x 800m Open in 10:48.45, while the 4 x 400m, Girls Under-17 won silver with a 4:17.69 clocking.

Barrouallie’s other silver medal was attained in the Under-17 Girls 4 x 100m, as they stopped the clock at 51.01s.

The Barrouallie Secondary was represented by Ayah Stapleton, Afiya Thomas, Kesian John, Alia Mc Dowall, Arianna Miller, Shykeina Francis, Hayley Bushay and Kenisha Richards.

Meanwhile, the St Vincent Grammar School, who field athletes only in the 17 and Over age group, copped bronze in the 4 x 400m, returning a time of 3:29.25. The school was fourth in the 4 x 200m with a clocking of 1:36.51 and sixth in the 4 x 100m. Serani Roban, Matthew Robinson, Sean Henry, Keo Davis, Desroi Quammie, Amari Hercules, Loie Paul and Ethan Isaacs made up the St Vincent Grammar School’s team.

The two St Vincent schools gained entry to the Trinbago Relays on the basis of winning their respective category at the 2023 staging of the National Lotteries Authority Inter- Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (ISSAC).
