Two athletes meet 2024 Junior Carifta standards

Tyhra Charles and Zichri Hepburn have attained the qualifying standards for the Under-20 Girls 200m and the Under-20 Boys 5000m as set by Team Athletics SVG, for the 51st edition of the Junior Carifta Games set for Grenada over the 2024 Easter weekend.

The 16 year old Charles who is based in St Kitts and Nevis, clocked 24.32 secs in the 200m at the KFC Classic held at the Nevis Athletic Stadium on January 14, 2024.

Team Athletics SVG’ s qualifying A standard for the event is 24.68secs; while the B standard is 24.80secs.

Apart from qualifying for the Junior Carifta Games, Charles has met the entry requirement for the 200m at this year’s World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Peru in August.

Meanwhile, Hepburn timed 16:44.07 at the Pamenos Ballantyne Distance and Jumps Classic staged last Saturday January 20, 2024 at the Diamond Track Facility.

In the process, Hepburn met the A standard of 16:50.40. The B Standard is 17:00.

Team Athletics, for the first time, has instituted the two standards. The A standard almost guarantees athletes a place to the Games, while the B standards achievements will be considered.

Other factors such as the availability of finance, consistency of performances, proof of health and ethical standards of behaviour would be taken into consideration before the final selections are made.
