Thirteen -year-old accomplishes Sailing mission

It was the ambition of 13-year-old Kai Marks- Dasent to sail across to Bequia to raise money to help fund his future representation at regional and international regattas.

And, last Sunday January 14, 2024, he accomplished both goals.

Apart from making the 10 mile solo journey from Blue Lagoon at Ratho Mill, to Bar One in Bequia, Kai’s efforts resulted in him being able to attend the Open Skiff North American Championships in Augusta, Georgia, where he will be part of a three- member St Vincent and the Grenadines sailing team; as well as the Antigua National Championships.

Supporting Kai’s trip across to Bequia were Bar One, Jaden Sun, Dell’s Apartments, Mustique Company, Cafe Soleil, KFC, Dive SVG, ECMIL, Minors Hardware, Last Bar Before the Jungle, Mayreau and Sugar Apple Bequia.

A release from Vincy Sailing states that young Marks- Dasent expressed satisfaction that he had achieved his goal.

“ I love it; the surfing was my favourite part… I was really happy with boat, ” he commented.

Kai traversed the channel using an ILCA4 laser boat donated by Queen Mary Sailing Club in the UK, and shipped by Kestrel Liners.

The young sailor underscored that he was ably supported by his parents Sabrina and Brian, as well as his brother, Rio.

On his way to Bequia, Kai was watched closely by safety officers and coaches, aboard the speed boat Tic Tac.
