SVGTTA mourns loss of national player and administrator

The St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association (SVGTTA), has lost a former national player, coach and administrator Carlton Daniel.

The 46-year-old Daniel lost his battle with a terminal illness last Sunday, December 24, just after 4 pm EST, at his younger brother’s home in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Responding to Daniel’s death, President of the SVGTTA Orville Haslam, described him as “ friend and one who contributed to the growth of Table Tennis here in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“On behalf of the association, I want to express our deepest condolences to Daniel’s immediate family and surviving relatives… He will surely be missed as he did make a valuable contribution to the sport of Table Tennis”, Haslam accounted.

Haslam who recalled speaking to Daniel prior to his departure for Canada, revealed that despite his medical struggles, he was buoyant and still addressed the development of Table Tennis.

“Carlton loved Table Tennis and still wanted to assist where possible but that was not to be”, Haslam lamented.

Daniel copped the national men’s singles titles on a few occasions, with his last being 2017, when he retained his crown won the previous year.

He then was the top seed for St Vincent and the Grenadines to the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia. Incidentally, that was his last national representation.

Haslam who was the Table Tennis manager to that edition of the Commonwealth Games, related “He contributed as a player, a coach and administrator… He made and left his mark”.

Daniel attended the St Martin’s Secondary School and went on to gain higher education in Cuba from 2002 to 2008.

Details of Daniel’s funeral are yet to be decided by his family.
