Joachim smashes two records at World Championships

Alexander Joachim broke two of his own St Vincent and the Grenadines Swim records when he lowered the times in the Men’s 50 m Butterfly and the 100 m Freestyle.

Joachim’s feats were achieved at the staging of the World Aquatics Championships, in Fukuoka, Japan, July 23 to 30.

The first to go was the 50 m Butterfly, as he clocked 25.58 seconds, bettering the previous record of 25.63 seconds, swum in May this year in Canada.

Joachim followed up by breaking his four-year-old record in the 100 m freestyle, stopping the clock at 54.29 seconds from the 2019 effort of 52.78. He thus shaved off 1.51 seconds.

The other members of the St Vincent and the Grenadines team to the championships included Kennice Greene, Mya Defreitas and Shane Cadogan.

Greene equalled her personal best in the 50 m Butterfly with a 29.90 seconds clocking, but her 28.23 seconds in the 50 m Freestyle, did not match her personal best of 27. 81 seconds.

Meanwhile, Defreitas was able to better her timing in the 100 m Freestyle, clocking 1:2.19, lowering her previous best by 0.61 seconds.

However, her 2:16.22 in the 200 m Freestyle was 0.74 slower than he best effort over the distance.

And, Cadogan registered 30.23 seconds in the 50 m Breaststroke and 24.59 seconds in the 50 m Freestyle, which were 0.34 seconds and 0.33 seconds slower respectively that his personal bests.

Emanating from the championships, the four Vincentian representatives gained valuable ranking points.

Joachim accumulated – 1361, Greene- 1189, Defreitas- 1144 and Cadogan- 1246.
