CYG duo break national records
Brandon George and Kevern Da Silva, two of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ representatives at the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) held in Trinidad and Tobago, broke two national records.
George reset his own 15 to 16 age group, 100 m Backstroke record of 1:02.59, lowering it to 1:02.47.
The previous mark was established at the 2023 Carifta Swim Championships in Curacao.
Meanwhile, Da Silva broke Shne Joachim’s nine-year-old record in the 50 m Backstroke.
The new record stands at 33.16s, bettering Joachim’s 33.52s, done at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Both new national records were set last Sunday, August 6, at the National Aquatic Centre, Caroni, Trinidad.
The other member of the St Vincent and the Grenadines swim team was Jamie Joachim, who competed in the Girls 50 and 100 m Backstroke, as well as the 50 and 100m Freestyle.
Likewise, George swam the 50 m and 200 m Backstroke, along with the 50 m Freestyle and Da Silva, the 100 and 200 m Backstroke.
The VII Commonwealth Youth Games ran from August 4 to 11, and included Fast5 Netball, Athletics and Para Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Cycling, Rugby Sevens and Triathlon.
