Special Olympians’ performance delights Training Director
Training Director of Special Olympic St Vincent and the Grenadines, Terrance Davis is pleased with the performance of the team at the 2023 World Games held in Berlin, Germany from June 17-25.
The nine- member St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) team returned with six medals- four silver and two bronze.
“ I am really pleased with the performance … It was fantastic, and the fact that we medalled in all three disciplines is even more satisfying”, Davis told SEARCHLIGHT.
Putting the performance into perspective, Davis highlighted some unexpected changes to the team’s classification.
“ We had to make some adjustments. When we got to Germany we found out that our athletes were placed in different categories from what that had registered … and that proved a challenge for us, but the athletes showed grit”, Davis explained.
He said those unexpected changes were compounded by a few disqualifications.
In spite of the challenges, the team gave a good account of itself. Attaining medals were Natasha Doyle, Teron Hull and Andrick Arthur (Tennis); Krista Bynoe ( Swimming); and Jason Browne (Track and Field).
Doyle earned silver in the Female Tennis singles, while Hull and Arthur teamed up for a silver in doubles Tennis.
Bynoe won silver in the Women’s 50 metres Backstroke, and bronze in the 25 metres Breaststroke.
The other medal, a bronze, was secured by Jason Browne in the men’s 100 metres.
Apart from the medals, the Vincentians gained ribbons.
Browne was fourth in the 200 metres, and Presley Peters was sixth in the 100 metres, while Doyle and Uitca Smith were fifth in Women’s Doubles Tennis.
Welch Ollivierre and Jason Williams, both swimmers, completed the Vincentian team of athletes.
Making up the management unit were Sezevra Joseph, president of Special Olympics SVG as head of delegation; Davis- assistant head of delegation, along with coaches- Helen Ashton ( Swimming); Sorenya Miller (Track and Field); and Roxanne Williams (Tennis).
Medical Personnel Frankie Joseph, and Desmarie Greenaway, completed the Vincentian contingent.
The delegation returned home on June 28.
