SVG cops one medal at Junior Carifta Games

One bronze medal was St Vincent and the Grenadines’ taking from the 50th edition of the Junior Carifta Games that took place in the Bahamas from April 7 to 10. Amal Glasgow, who placed third in a time of 47.18 seconds in the Under-20 Boys 400 metres was the lone Vincentian on the podium at the Thomas Robinson Stadium.

Glasgow thus exited the Games with two bronze medals, following his first last year, when the event was staged in Jamaica.

As Glasgow leaves the Junior Division, a bright spark for St Vincent and the Grenadines entered as Tyhra Charles finished fifth and fourth, in the Under-17 Girls 100 metres and 200 metres respectively.

Charles timed 12.07 seconds in the 100 metres finals, having clocked 12.11 seconds in the heats and 12.10 seconds in the semi-finals.

Her time in the 200 metres heats was 24.14 seconds, with a 23.87 seconds timing in the semifinals, and 24.12 seconds in the finals.

Despite not returning a medal her 23.87 seconds was her personal best.

Two other St Vincent and the Grenadines athletes placed fourth in their respective events. Tedre O’Neil who was part of the historic introduction of the Pole Vault, was fourth in that discipline, climbing to a personal best of 3.80 metres.

Also ending one step away from the podium was Henreek K Francois, whose 9:44.39 in the Under-17 Boys 3000 metres, landed him a fourth place.

Down the line, J’aviar Cato was fifth in the Under-17 Boys Long Jump, with a leap of 6.34 metres.
Meanwhile, Samayaa Connell placed sixth in the seven event Heptathlon with 4068 points, setting a new National Under-20 record. The previous mark was 3361 points, attained by Gailann John last year.

Still in the multi-events, Recordo Williams was tenth overall in the Octathlon and placing ninth was Zichri Hepburn in the Under-20 Boys 5000 metres. Hepburn’s time was 16:33.60.
Completing the Vincentian contingent of athletes were Keo Davis, Kyle Lawrence and Uroy Ryan.

Davis, who made the step up to the Under-20 male category this year, found the going tough as he ran 11.09 seconds in the 100 metres heats which was not good enough for him to advance.
He however made it to the 200 metres semi-finals, after running 21.66 seconds in the heats and 21.97 seconds in the semi-finals.

Lawrence did 10.88 seconds in the 100 metres heats and 10.81 seconds in the semifinals, but his 22.08 seconds in the 200 metres did not get him beyond the heats.

And, Ryan who was a silver medallist last year in the Under-20 Boys Long Jump, did not get an opportunity to make his last appearance at the Carifta Games as he was deemed unfit to compete, after travelling to the Bahamas.

Last year, St Vincent and the Grenadines copped five medals.

Grenada will host the 51st edition of the Junior Carifta Games, set again for the Easter weekend.
