Sixteen benefit from Spencer’s Table Tennis Clubs’ camp

Sixteen Table Tennis players between the ages of 10 and 23 years were part of the Spencer’s Table Tennis Clubs’ four-day training camp staged from Monday, April 2, to Thursday, April 6, at the headquarters of the New Democratic Party (NDP), at Murray’s Road.

During the training camp, the participants were engaged in: learning the rudiments of the sport, drills, and competitive matches.

Chief facilitator Romano Spencer, explained that “the goals of the camp were to bring together other clubs in the goal of raising [their] standard of play, as well as create good cooperation between clubs, while promoting competitiveness”.

As such, coach, Leighton Adams of the Adams Table Tennis Club, an affiliate of the SVG Table Tennis Association(SVGTTA), was part of the camp, along with some of his players from Troumaca.
Spencer noted that the camp also sought to give hands-on coaching education and was a prelude to the commemoration of World Table Tennis Day, to be observed on April 23.

Assessing the four day exercise, Spencer said, “ I felt that the camp achieved its goals, had the desired effect and attendance…”.

“The participants got a taste of the work needed to take the next step towards developing their skills and becoming more competitive.

“ The younger kids got to see the older and better players in action and even got to interact with them which in turn motivated them even more….I hope to get to do more camps at this level to see my goal of SVG being a top competitor in the region”, Spencer added.

He thanked the President of the SVGTTA, Orville Haslam; Vincy Table Tennis Foundation; and the SVG Olympic Committee for their input and feedback in ensuring that the camp was a success.
