Tennis programme soon to be offered to residents on Canouan and Union Island
Residents of the Southern Grenadine islands of Canouan and Union Island will soon have the opportunity to be engaged in an active Tennis programme.
The Lions Club on Union Island will be spearheading an undertaking to have the sports taught to persons on both islands.
This is being made possible through a donation of rackets, racket holders and hundreds of Tennis balls from Burnis Hutchinson and Elnore Adams.
Both currently residing in the USA, Hutchinson and Adams, who are natives of Union Island, procured the items and got them shipped to the Lions Club on Union Island for distribution.
President of the club Atika James, told SEARCHLIGHT that her organisation welcomes the donation and is working to have the items put into full use.
“ We are grateful for the donations… We have had some distributed to Canouan… It is now for the programme to get started… We are working closely with the Sports Officer, Rickydene Alexander.”
James said that while the Tennis programme is geared mainly for the schools, “anyone of any age will be welcomed to participate. Other than getting people to learn the sport, we foresee hosting competitions”, she said.
Meanwhile, Alexander who is the Sports Officer assigned to the Southern Grenadines joined James in welcoming the Tennis initiative.
He said once the logistics are worked out the programme will get going.
