New record sets off College 2023 athletics season

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College’s 2023 track and field season got off to a record-breaking start with the annual road relay on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

The run began at the Division of Technical and Vocational Education (DTVE) in Arnos Vale and consisted of six legs. The first was from DTVE to Sekai in Arnos Vale; the second from Sekai to the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College’s Villa Campus; the third leg from the SVGCC Villa Campus to Facey Trading in Glen; the fourth leg from Facey Trading to Blue Lagoon and back to Howard’s Marine in Villa; the fifth leg from Howard’s Marine to the La Vue Hotel gap; and the final leg from La Vue Hotel gap to DTVE.

Defending champions, the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies (DASGS) Team One, ran hard, recording a new time of 47 minutes, 40.41 seconds to eclipse the old record of 48 minutes, 54.47 seconds, which was set in 2019 by Year Two DASGS.

The DASGS Team One team of Darren Morgan-Jeffers, Jimmel Lewis, Ronaldeno Solomon, Delroy Glasgow, Kriston Wyille and Kahlil Charles were at one point in third position early into the second leg, but a masterful run by Jimmel Lewis changed all that as he devoured everyone ahead of him and the distance between Sekai and the SVGCC Villa Campus gym to take the lead for the defending champions.

From there onward there was no looking back as the team’s experienced runners on the next four legs strategically paced themselves to a record breaking finish, and in so doing retained the SVGCC male road relay championship title.

The Division of Technical and Vocational Education took the second spot in a time of 52 minutes, 47.35 seconds, while Sports Sciences Combined were third in 58 minutes, 22.49 seconds.
In the female division, a new champion was crowned as the Division of Technical and Vocational Education (DTVE), trumped the other three female teams to take the top spot.

The team of D’andrea James, Yolanda James, Danica Shallow, Rochel Edwards, Kimberly Bacchus, and Orianne Ambris combined running, speed-walking, with the occasional leisure walking to clock a winning time of 1 hour, 22 minutes 15.67 seconds, to be crowned 2023 SVGCC Female Road Relay champions.

The DASGS female team was second in 1 hour, 24 minutes, 40.15 seconds; while the Division of Nursing Education took third spot in 1 hour 25 minutes, 28.55 seconds.

The 2023 St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College’s athletic competition continues on Monday, March 27 with heats at the Sir Vincent Beache Stadium from 9:30 a.m., and the Inter-house Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, April 5, also at the Sir Vincent Beache Stadium.
