Inmates penalize Officers in football clash at Victoria Park

The inmates of His Majesty’s Prisons on Friday evening, December 17 trounced officers of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), 3-2 on penalties in a much anticipated football clash at the Victoria after both sides drew 1-all at the end of regulation time.

The officers went ahead in the first half when Benniton Stapleton converted from the penalty spot, but the inmates never gave in. In a game which was at times physical as both combatants tried to exert their dominance, the inmates mounted raid after raid on their opponents’ goal, but stout defending kept them at bay.

It was in the second half that Kyle Bacchus left his marker trailing in his wake to slam one past the police custodian to equalize and send the scores of patrons into a joyous frenzy.

The game then had to go to a penalty shoot out.

Police missed their first, but the inmates were able to find the back of the nets to win a much anticipated victory 3-2 on penalties kicks.

Following the game, each of the police officers presented individual inmates with a medal, with both teams posing collectively for a group photo.

It was a bitter sweet ending as family members and loved ones fought to hold back tears as the inmates prepared to return to H.M. Prisons; but as one woman remarked, “dem soon be free”.
