CLSS track meet attracts large crowd at Victoria Park

THE 2020 INTER-HOUSE track and field meet staged by the Central Leeward Secondary School (CLSS) at the Victory Park on Sunday, March 1, drew a large gathering of spectators.

Held for the second time on a Sunday, following last year’s success, this year’s event was deemed more successful.

Such has been the acceptance of the event on a Sunday that many parents expressed the desire to make it a permanent happening.

“It is the best thing they could ever did… Look at people,” said one vocal woman, as she cheered on her daughter.

Meanwhile, physical education teacher at the institution, Chester Morgan, noted that there was some opposition last year in some quarters to the idea to have the track meet on a Sunday evening, however, he believes that on the success of last year and this year, mind sets are being changed. In 2017, the CLSS had followed trendestters Bethel High School, and began to host its annual track meet at the Victoria Park from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

However, last year, the school moved the event from a week day, to Sunday.

When the 2020 edition was staged, Scott House (red) made it five straight titles, as they posted 1098 points.

Second was Lewis House (orange), with Bailey House (blue) in third place and James House, (green) fourth.

Valchris Laborde was the junior female champion and there was a tie for the junior male champion,

with Jaheim Williams and Jaheim Harry, level on points.

The intermediate female champion was Ulanda Lewis and the male champion, Oryan Velox. Taking the senior female champion award was Marlene Richards and Jacques Edwards, the senior male champion.

Richards and Edwards were also the victor and victrix ludorum, respectively.

This was the 42nd edition of the school’s track and field championships.
