Awesome FC undisputed national first division football champions
THREE YEARS AFTER being formed, Awesome FC have been crowned the first division champions of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation national club championships.
Facing Greiggs FC last Saturday at the Chili Playing Field in Georgetown, Awesome’s investiture was delayed as their plucky opponents failed to surrender.
Awesome took the lead through Rafique Delpesche, and Ozim Henderson doubled their tally in the 26th and 32nd minutes, respectively.
A 37th-minute penalty by Romario Dennie, who doubled his tally in the 41st, brought Greiggs level.
Henderson then completed his brace, before Dennie sneaked in a goal in injury time to level the score 3-3.
This meant that the title had to be decided from the penalty spot.
Awesome proved to be better adept at penalty kicks, hence trumped 3-1, and more so, the title of first division champions.
It was the second national
football title for Awesome, as last year, the unit grasped the Futsal first division title.
Jerry Charles, Awesome’s head coach said that his management is already preparing for making the step up to the premiership of the 2019/2020 national club championships.
“From the semi-final game that we won and we knew we were promoted, we have already started thinking about the premiership… One of the measures we are going to put in place is recruitment,” Charles indicated.
According to Charles, they are going to recruit some players “to strengthen some areas”.
Charles said, though, for the time being, they will be savouring the joy of being crowned first division champions.
Both Awesome and Greiggs have been promoted to the premier division.
This was established since they were triumphant in their semi-final matches.
Awesome beat Sparta 4-2 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, while Greiggs had a 2-0 win over RSVG Police.
In Saturday’s third place playoff, which preluded the final, Sparta beat RSVG Police 4-1, to finish with the bronze.
