Dawnley Joseph delighted by WIPA’s Life Time Achievement Award
Former St Vincent and the Grenadines, Windward Islands and West Indies B team opening batsman Dawnley Joseph is beaming from ear to ear, after he was named as the recipient of the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) Lifetime Achievement Award.
Joseph was given the award at the hosting of the sixth WIPA/ Cricket West Indies – CWI Awards Ceremony, staged last week Wednesday at the Hilton Hotel in Barbados.
Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT, Joseph said: “I am feeling really proud of such an award, as it is nice to be recognised after all I have given to cricket”.
Still an active cricketer at the age of 51, Joseph plays for Stanley Browne Stubbs in the SVG masters’ cricket competition.
His career spans just over 40 years of being involved in local cricket tournaments.
Joseph has had a distinguished stint for St Vincent and the Grenadines, which started in 1983, when he was selected to the national Under-19 outfit.
The powerfully-built right handed batsman retired from national duties in 2006. During that period, Joseph became senior St Vincent and the Grenadines team captain, and extended his leadership to the Windwards.
Joseph was rewarded with a tour to Zimbabwe in 1989 with the West Indies B team, there he made his mark scoring 456 runs in his seven innings.
His first class career counted 68 matches, scoring 3,676 runs at an average of 30.89. Joseph’s highest score was 149.
But Joseph lists his 109 for the Windwards versus Jamaica in 1988 at the Sabina Park in Jamaica, as one of his best innings, in what was then the Red Stripe Cup regional four-day competition.
In that match, he had to face up to West Indies quicks, which included the likes of Patrick Patterson, Michael Holding and Courtney Walsh.
Apart from representing the Windwards and West Indies B, Joseph has played for the regional President’s XI versus the touring Australians in 1991 at Warner Park in St Kitts.
SEARCHLIGHT congratulates Joseph on his award.
