West Indies go 1-0 against Sri Lanka in test series

West Indies completed a 226-run win over Sri Lanka on Sunday, on the fifth and final day of the first test of the three match test series at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago.

Resuming on 176 for 3, and with the visitors needing 277 more runs for an improbable, West Indies bowlers went to work to dismiss Sri Lanka for 226.

Sri Lanka collapsed from 218 for 5.

Kusal Mendis was leading Sri Lanka’s ambitious push for an improbable 453 runs for victory and was 94 not out at the start of day five.

But Mendis was caught behind off Shannon Gabriel for 102 with 10 fours and two sixes.

Captain – Dinesh Chandimal – who retired on 15 on Saturday – was out for 27.

Roston Chase finished on 4 for 15 off 8.2 overs and legspinner Devendra Bishoo took 3 for 48 off 19 overs.

West Indies declared its first innings on 414 for 8 with wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich 125 not out, striking 12 fours.

Shai Hope – 44 and 38 each from Kieran Powell and Roston Chase, all made contributions.

But the efforts of captain Jason Holder and Devendra Bishoo, who both stroked 40, propped up the home side innings.

They shared in healthy partnerships of 90 and 102, respectively with Dorwich.

Holder and Dorwich combined for the sixth wicket and Bishoo and Dorwich for the seventh.

Bowling for Sri Lanka Lahiru Kumara had 4 for 95.

Sri Lanka was then dismissed for 185, with Chandimal making 44.

Leading the West Indies bowling were Miguel Cummins who had 3 for 39; Kemar Roach – 2 for 34 and Shannon Gabriel – 2 for 39.

West Indies declared its second innings on 223 for 7 with Kieran Powell scoring 88 and Jason Hiolder – 44 .

Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Kumara took 3 for 40 and Ragana Herath – 2 for 52.

The second of three tests starts on Thursday at the Darren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia.
