THE FUTURE CROP of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ table tennis players gave a glimpse of the pecking order, when the 2018 St Vincent and the Grenadines Table Tennis Association (SVGTTA) National Cadet/Junior Championships concluded last Saturday at the auditorium of the West St George Secondary School. Taking the pre-cadet title was Caleb Howard, who defeated Michel Creese 11-7, 11-4, 11-2 in the final.
But Howard was not able to replicate that form when he faced off with Akeil De Roche in the final of the cadet division.
De Roche trumped in straight sets 15-13, 11-8,11-8.
Prior to his meeting with Howard, De Roche had beaten Dureese Nelson 11-7, 11-4, 10-12, 11-5.
On the other side of the semi-finals, Howard beat Michel Creese 13-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6.
Creese, though, stepped up his game a notch when he and De Roche squared off in the junior final, to win 9-11 ,11-8 ,9-11 ,11-8, 11-7. Before getting to the final, Creese got past Caleb Howard 9-11, 10-12, 11-5,11-8, 11-8, while De Roche claimed his spot in the final, after beating Joshua Joseph 11-6 , 7-11, 11-8 11-8. Creese and De Roche had also blended their skills to oust brothers Caleb and Juwan Howard 9-11, 10-12, 11-5, 11-8, 118, in the final of the junior doubles category.
De Roche was declared the competition’s Most Valuable Player.
Last Saturday’s winners join Leah Cumberbatch, the female Under-18 champion and Delecia Michael, the Under-15 champion.
The senior and veterans’ championships were set to commence yesterday (Thursday), also at the West St George Secondary School.
